In recent years, a variety of plant-based milks have taken over grocery shelves, offering an alternative to traditional dairy milk. One of these, oat milk, has particularly captured the hearts (and taste buds) of consumers. But what is it about oat milk that has made it so popular? Let’s dive into the world of this dairy-free darling.
What is Oat Milk?
Oat milk is a creamy, dairy-free alternative made from whole oat grains or steel-cut oats blended with water. This mixture is then strained to produce a liquid that is reminiscent in texture to cow’s milk, but with a subtly sweet and slight oat-y flavor.
Why Choose Oat Milk?
- Eco-Friendly: Oat milk’s environmental footprint is smaller than that of dairy milk. It requires less water than almond milk and doesn’t produce as much greenhouse gas as dairy farming.
- Nutritional Benefits: While nutritional content can vary between brands, oat milk generally offers fiber, is fortified with vitamins and minerals (such as calcium and vitamin D), and has no cholesterol. One of my favorite brands of oats is One Degree Organic Foods Sprouted Rolled Oats. I love that there are no added sugars and it is a good source of fiber!
- Allergy and Intolerance Friendly: Unlike nut-based milks, oat milk is a suitable option for those with nut allergies. And, naturally, it’s dairy-free, catering to those who are lactose intolerant or vegan. This the the main reason we switched to oat milk due to having both of these dietary needs in our house.
- Taste and Texture: Oat milk’s creamy consistency is a hit among coffee lovers. Its ability to froth makes it an excellent choice for lattes and cappuccinos. Plus, its natural sweetness often reduces the need for added sugars.
Making Oat Milk at Home
If you’re curious to try your hand at making oat milk, below is a simple recipe to follow. However, we use the MioMat 8-in-1 Milk Maker and let me tell you this is BY FAR the easiest machine to use and very efficient, just throw everything in and add water. It not only makes plant-based milks, but it can also make smoothies and soups! Plus it also self-cleans…HUGE bonus for busy families! Definitely must check it out!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 4 cups water
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil (makes it smooth like dairy milk)
- 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup or sweetener of choice (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Procedure:
- Blend the oats and water in a high-speed blender for about 30 seconds.
- Using a nut milk bag or a thin dishcloth, strain the liquid into a bowl or jug, squeezing out as much liquid as possible.
- If you’re adding sweeteners or flavorings, return the strained liquid to the blender, add your chosen ingredients, and blend again briefly.
- Store in a sealed container in the fridge for up to five days. (We use glass jars) Shake well before using, as it may separate over time.
Oat Milk’s Future
Given its rising popularity, it’s clear that oat milk is not just a passing fad. As consumers become more health-conscious and environmentally aware, oat milk stands out as a sustainable and delicious choice. It’s not just for coffee, either; oat milk is versatile and can be used in smoothies, baking, cooking, and even on cereal. Hence the reason I use it in my breads!
In the evolving world of dairy alternatives, oat milk shines with its delightful balance of flavor, texture, and ethical considerations. So, the next time you’re looking for a creamy addition to your drink or recipe, why not give oat milk a try? It might just become your new favorite.
